The Club was founded in 1884 and was the first woman's club in North Dakota. Literary study was the club's objective but later expanded to community projects, woman's suffrage, temperance, and world affairs. In 1899, the club initiated the Fargo Public Library movement; the club has maintained a seat on the library board since 1903.
